Gau Beltza, which means %AB "Black Night" %BB in Basque, is an ancient celebration in the
Basque Country that takes place every year on October 31 in Hendaye. This tradition marked the transition from fall to winter.

Today, the City of Hendaye revives this tradition through a large public festival blending Basque mythology, a witches’ ball, performances, music, dancing, parades, and symbolic rituals.

Participants are invited to share their fears, entrust them to the legendary creatures of the night, and watch them vanish in a purifying fire—a symbol of renewal and hope.

Gau Beltza is much more than a festival: it is a time for cultural transmission, collective memory, and intergenerational gathering.

Children must be accompanied by a parent.
