Father Christmas is checking his sleigh and Olentzero is preparing his coal: the magic of Christmas is taking hold in Hendaye!
From December 1st onwards, the Christmas bells are already ringing, Hendaye is decked out in its festive finery, and decorations light up every street corner from late afternoon onwards.
In the Basque Country, Olentzero, a character emblematic of Basque culture and mythology, descends from the mountains at the end of the year and wanders through the streets.
Despite his unattractive face, darkened by the coal he carries on his back, he is the messenger of light, representing the winter solstice.
He will be handing out sweets to the best-behaved children on December 24th.
As for Santa Claus, he’ll be making a special appearance in the parade a few days before Christmas Eve.
