In recent decades, the episode of the witch-hunt in the Basque Country in 1609 has been the subject of a wide variety of interpretations, many of which point to a political desire on the part of the monarchy to control this territory and its inhabitants.

On the other hand, the main work of judge Pierre de Lancre, which in fact constitutes the only testimony, has often been little or poorly analyzed as a document.

The aim today is to return to a factual and contextualized analysis that will enable us to understand why and how this repression of the crime of witchcraft took place in Labourd at that time.

To achieve this, we need to draw on all the resources of historical criticism.
Finally, a study of the historiography of this witch-hunt will help us to better understand the recent construction of a local collective memory on the subject.
