Just 30 minutes from Hendaye, this conurbation around the capital of the North Basque Country has something to suit every taste.
Sub-prefecture of the Pyrénées Atlantiques, the chocolate capital and well-known for the ham that bears its name, Bayonne is also a very charming town between the Nive and the Adour. Surrounded by battlements, the town is a mesh of narrow streets and alleyways with some very lively shops.
Amongst the must-see places allow us to point out Saint Mary’s Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Basque Museum which will provide you with information about local history.
The neighbouring town of Anglet, with a 4-km. long coast is surfers’ paradise.
And then further south you have the seductive charms of “Imperial” Biarritz (Napoleon 3rd built a palace here for his wife, Eugénie).
Don’t forget to stop and visit the Rocher de la Vierge and the Museum of the Sea.
