Situated on the ‘coast road’, Hendaye receives many pilgrims who are following the Saint James Way to Santiago de Compostela.

Several historians agree that this is one of the most ancient routes. In olden times it was considered the safest route because it avoided the lands of Navarre which were in the hands of the Moors.

The path runs parallel to the Gulf of Gascogne, crossing Gipuzkoa and then Biscay. It continues towards Cantabria and, finally, arrives at Galicia. The renowned scallop-shell decorates (well-named) Saint James' Bridge that links Hendaye and Irun.
